This talk addresses the question of why bullying is common in the church, esp. on the part of leaders. We consider briefly the influence of worldly models of leadership, the influence of “successful” (pragmatism, often controlling) leadership in the broader Christian world, a false culture of obedience, and the attractiveness of leadership positions to narcissists and bullies.
We then examine 7 traits of a bully: Lording it over others, controlling actions, controlling speech, resistance to correction, reliance on a cadre of complicit supporters, anger, and abuse.
The talk ends with 7 constructive solutions: Allowing (even expecting) differences of opinion, staying connected despite these differences, respect for others, striving for spiritual leadership, getting help when hurt by a bully, confronting the bully, and selecting leaders with character (not just charisma).
