381 AD. This is the date that Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire. Earlier in the same (fourth) century, it had become legal, but from this date on, during the reign of Theodotian, Christianity was the imperial religion. Persecution of non-Christians continued. Christendom (a word referring to the official church state) was even more firmly established. A dark year in the annals of church history.
