Rabbi is found in Matthew 23:7, 8, 25; 26:25, 49; Mark 9:5, 10:51, 11:21. 14:45; John 1:38, 49; 3:2, 26; 4:31, 6:25, 9:2, 11:8, 20:16. This honorific term of address means "rabbi, teacher, master." It was commonly used to address a religious leader/teacher. Literally, it means "my great one." (Note: The 'i' in rabbi is pronounced EE, not EYE.)
Though Jesus allowed himself to be addressed as "rabbi" (and by other titles), he forbade others to use the title. In fact, Jesus Christ discouraged honorific titles for religious leaders.
