I have always had some questions about Acts 2:42. The question I have is whether "devoting themselves to the breaking of the bread" is referring to eating meals with each other, or the taking of communion? -- Jeff Hernandez
As you have noticed, the phrase "breaking of bread" is somewhat ambivalent; it could actually mean either. Only in context can it be determined whether it refers to communion or not. My take on Acts 2 is this: 2:42 refers to the Lord's Supper, while 2:46 refers to more ordinary fellowship meals.
It seems from the New Testament (Acts 20:7) and the early Christian sources that the early disciples celebrated the Lord's Supper regularly, probably weekly, possibly more often.
