Metaphysics, traditionally understood, is the study of truth beyond (Greek meta) physics. This means metaphysics is a synonym of philosophy.
In my experience, people who talk about "'metaphysics" are simply trying to impress others, and for that reason I'd encourage us all to take a look at Colossians 2:4 and 2:8. Human reasoning alone is bound to fail, nor can it save our soul. It is like trying to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps. And it is exceedingly popular these days.
