In Acts 15:9, in referring to Cornelius, Peter said that God "purified their hearts by faith." No one has ever used that scripture with me to justify forgiveness of sins before baptism, but I cannot see why they could not. Besides using the obvious Scriptures about baptism, how would you explain that verse? -- Thomas
Acts 10:43 does not say they were saved at that point. Faith may purify your heart, but that doesn't mean you are saved. Besides, Peter said in 11:15 that at this point in his message (the divine interruption) he had only begun to speak; he hadn't delivered the whole message necessary for salvation. Which is why after the miracle from God he continues (or accelerates) his talk, and tells them how to have their sins forgiven through Jesus' name (10:48).
About "accepting Christ" (praying Jesus into your heart):
* This doctrine was invented in the USA, around 1830.
* Common evangelical experience.
* Revelation 3:20, written to lukewarm Christians, does not support it.
* John 1:12 does not support it.
* Inadequate focus on discipleship (Colossians 2:6-7).
* Receiving Christ (John 12:47-48) means accepting him on his terms, not inviting him into your heart.
