I have been advised that it is pretty useless studying with Jehovah's Witnesses because they are stubborn and nothing will eventuate. Surely there has to be an effective way to study with Jehovah's Witnesses without it ending in self-righteousness and arguments. How would you go about doing it? -- Ray L., Melbourne, Australia
Let me say first of all that Witnesses have been converted to Christ on several occasions. Though this is a much rarer event than we would hope for, it is totally possible to bring a sincerely seeking Witness to a knowledge of the truth. Let us take the advice of Paul, who wrote to Timothy about some of the pitfalls of arguments.
14 Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 23 Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. 24 And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25 Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will (2 Timothy 2:14-15, 23-26).
Salient points:
- Never quarrel about words.
- Be sure you know your stuff. Increasing your volume is no cover for poor Bible knowledge.
- No arguments!
- Be kind to the one who opposes you. Be nice!
- Instruct gently. Realize where people truly stand spiritually and pray for God to work in their lives.
