What is your advice for someone that wants to become part of a sorority or fraternity? -- Elvina U. Lake
I think that depends on the nature of the sorority or fraternity. Loyalty to Christ must never come second. No family, fraternity, or government has the right to ask for unconditional allegiance and obedience. Interestingly, many have become Christians out of ministries within fraternities! In my view, the more associations true Christians can influence, the better. Here are a few suggestions:
* Decide whether you can be a member of the group without compromising your conscience.
* Decide whether you can (realistically) afford any dues or other financial obligations that may be involved.
* If you are going to join, be determined that you will share your faith within the fraternity or sorority.
* Determine whether involvement in the group and in the local congregation may compromise your academic standing.
* Talk with brothers/sisters who have been members of fraternities/sororities. Their perspectives will be more valuable than mine!
