Is it true that the word "tithe" doesn't appear even once in the New Testament? I looked but I may have missed it. If it doesn't, does that mean that God no longer requires it and rather encourages it only as a way to help out the less fortunate of the world? -- Jus
The word tithe is related to the word "tenth," and they mean the same. You will find the word tenth in most modern English Bibles (as in Matthew 23 and Hebrews 7). And yet each occurrence refers to the practice of tithing under the Old Covenant. This is an important distinction. Nowhere does the NT command us to give 10%--not that I am opposed (in general) to the practice. For more on this matter, please search the site for articles on tithing.
