I was wondering about the signs of the zodiac. I know that in Deuteronomy 18 it says divination is a sin. Are the zodiac signs connected with divination?
Yes, they are deeply connected with divination. Though the signs of the zodiac are artificial constructs--most constellations are not true star clusters, just projections of mythological fantasy--the attempt to ascertain and manipulate the future is equivalent to playing God.
Interestingly, in Israel, in the ancient town of Sepphoris, close to where Jesus once lived, archaeologists have unearthed a synagogue of the Jews which is heavily decorated with astrological signs! I had a chance to visit this synagogue in 2008.
Apparently the temptation to gaze into the heavens has been a persistent one. When we lift up our eyes (Psalm 121), let's be careful what we're looking at.
