For a Christian married couple, is it possible for one to commit spousal rape to another? Does the Bible say anything about "spousal rape" (a legal term, I assume)? In a troubled marriage, are there any biblical exceptions to living by the "mutual consent" scripture in 1 Corinthians 7? -- Michael (New York)
The very passage you cite, 1 Corinthians 7, speaks of the voluntary aspect of marital sexual relations--including abstaining from relations. Respect for the other is integral to any relationship, and nowhere is this more true than in the marriage relationship.
It would never be right for one partner to force another partner to have sexual relations. At the same time, it must be kept in mind that 1 Corinthians 7 insists that spouses must not "deprive" one another. It is left up to each couple to strike the balance.
I'd hesitate to use the word "rape" unless there is actually violence involved. Emotional pressure brought to bear to influence a spouse should not be called "rape," even if it is wrong. (Terminology must reflect reality.)
