I noticed that soon after Jesus washed the feet of his disciples (John 13), he mentioned his Father's house (John 14). I've heard that it was customary to wash people's feet before they entered into your house. Is there some symbolism here as to the entering of their Father's house? -- Nicholas Karastamatis
I had never noticed the connection before; thanks for pointing it out to me. You are right, foot-washing was considered a normal courtesy in connection with hospitality in New Testament times. The connection may be implied in this narrative. And yet I would be careful about drawing the inference, since our entrance into the Father's house takes place only after Jesus' return to earth, when he brings us to be with him.
The more immediate sense of "residence" in this passage is the Lord's taking up residence in our hearts (14:23).
