Was Jacob a Samaritan? I recently read John 4, which implies Jacob was a Samaritan (those who do not associate with Jews). Is this right? -- Janice Crosley
We must remember that this Jacob--and there are many Jacobs in the Bible--was the patriarch Jacob, grandson of Abraham and father of the twelve tribes of Israel. There were no Samaritans, historically speaking, until the 8th century BC. (See 2 Kings 17.) So, no, Jacob was not a Samaritan, though one of the wells he had dug was in territory which centuries later would be known as Samaria.
