You are right, there is little written about the afterlife in the Old Testament--though there are some passages which indicate it, for example in Psalms and Daniel.
God's revelation through the Bible was progressive. He did not reveal everything at once, but patiently and gradually led mankind (and especially his people) to a knowledge of the truth. By N.T. times, the body of knowledge has grown considerably. Jesus, of course, learned from his Father, as he repeatedly insists in the Gospel of John. Much more could be said in response to your interesting question, and I encourage you to keep studying.
