As I understand the text, they are the promise (v.15) and the oath (v.16). God is completely reliable, and provides the assurance and firmness our souls need (v.19). In the song, "On Christ the solid rock I stand," we sing, "the anchor holds within the veil." The Lord is pleading with the second generation of Christians not to drift (2:1), not to take their eyes off Jesus (3:1, 12:2), not to turn their backs on him to their eternal loss (6:4-6, 10:36ff).
