I came across an online resource for a Bible translation I was unfamiliar with. The ISV (International Standard Version) purports to bridge the gap between literal and idiomatic translations. The homepage of the website, www.isv.org, says "Welcome to the most readable and accurate Bible translation ever produced." I was curious whether you had any insight into this translation and whether it lives up to its own billing. -- Mike Williams (Boise)
You are the first person to alert me to the existence of the ISV. Thanks! I feel prepared to share some thoughts about this new version (the Old Testament portion is still "under construction").
I think I like this version. It has a good feel, with both readability and accuracy. Currently, I'm reading (and greatly enjoying) the Holman Christian Standard Bible (1999). After that I will read the New English Translation, and then probably the English Standard Version. There are a number of very good translations coming out these days! I would encourage us all: Wean yourself off the Bible of your youth -- whether KJV, RSV, or NIV -- and read broadly. The benefits are many:
* Any time we read in a different version or language, reflection is stimulated. We are more likely to process what passes before our eyes.
* We are less likely to buy into idiosyncratic translation choices when we read from a number of versions.
* New and fresh wording helps God's word feel new and fresh. It heightens the adventure of Bible study!
Perhaps the billing ("most readable and accurate") is premature -- let the next generation pronounce that judgment -- but that is no reason to shy away from a new version. So is it as good as it claims to be? There's only one way to find out!
