Where do you stand on the Filioque controversy? -- Roger Hoelzel (Grand Rapids)
[For those not familiar with the controversy, the Latin form of the Nicene Creed states that the Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son. Filioque means "and from the son." Those who disagreed omitted the fateful phrase.]Do you mean the original one? I would not be too dogmatic about that one. I can go either way. The Spirit proceeds from the Father or from the Father and the Son. I doubt many of my readers will grasp (or care about!) the distinction... And I certainly would not make this a matter of salvation, as the 4th century church tried to do!
