I am challenged with Luke 9:57-60, in particular Jesus telling the man to “let the dead bury the dead.” I have heard it said in the past that this man's father may not have been dead yet, and he was waiting for an inheritance. But, if taken at face value, it is hard for me to understand. I would personally have a very difficult time not attending my own father's funeral. Any light you can shed would be much appreciated! -- Susan
You are supposed to be disturbed by this passage! Jesus is trying to get your attention. Whether you attend funerals or not is not the point; similarly whether a father might still be living or not.
Jesus often spoke hyperbolically. Can you think of other passages where he spoke this way?
