In Matthew 5:5 what does "inherit the earth" mean? I can find loads of information about the first part of the verse, referring to the meaning of "meek," but I can't find much about the blessing following meekness. -- Terri R.
In the O.T., they inherit the land (the land of Israel). In the N.T., the sense is more cosmic. It is the earth.
Interestingly, in O.T. Hebrew, 'arets means both earth and land. Likewise, in N.T. Greek, ge has both meanings.
In short, the meek are the ones who will be standing in the judgment, not the arrogant. For more, please read Psalm 1.
