A disciple recently posted this article. https://sojo.net/articles/jesus-was-protester. I'm not sure why, but it bothered me. What do you think about it?
Interesting… Yesterday I passed a group of protesters — in front of the local "Trump Tower" — and they perplexed me. Their placards even featured contradictory statements. (Was this one group, or two? Did they even have a coherent message?)
Maybe protests rub us the wrong way because:
-
- Protesters normally stand around, or pace tight circles, carrying their signs and more or less staying in one place. Jesus didn’t carry a sign. He walked everywhere. He catalyzed change not by holding up a sign or shouting, but by interacting with people, from the top authorities to the poorest and most disenfranchised of all.
- Many protesters are unpleasant, angry — and we wonder if they are taking out their life frustrations in campaigning for their “cause.”
- Jesus, in contrast, was a joyful person. He placed his full confidence in the Father. He did not carry emotional baggage—or if he did, he dealt with it in healthy ways. Nor did he carry placards lamenting the woeful state of the economy, or of Judaism -- or anything else.
