Why did Jesus say he had to go in order for the Holy Spirit to come to the disciples? – T.K.
Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live” (John 14:15-19).
The Father and Son dwell in us by the Spirit. This was not the case during the centuries of the old covenant (John 7:39), which anticipated the outpouring of the Spirit (Joel 2:28).
Jesus said, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him” (John 14:23).
By indwelling every Christian on the planet, Jesus could be with more than one person at a time. This was not possible while in his earthly body, since then he was limited by time and space.
In Acts 2 he pours out the Spirit—a supernatural event possible only once he had ascended to the right hand of the Father. See Acts 2:30 and 33.
