Suicides have nearly doubled in the United States among young people in recent years. Other age groups are not immune to this scourge. Today I'll share about the many resources we have at our disposal.
Resources for Suicide Prevention
Today I'll share some of the many resources available for those struggling with suicide ideation. Once your friend has decided to not harm themselves, they need support to get back on track. Consider these valuable resources:
The Church - As a professional counselor, I'm always impressed with the Lord's church and how it represents a supportive environment for those hurting. Of course, it's not perfect and not set up for intense professional counseling, but all the same it is a very helpful place to find support. Think about the resources we have:
- The Word to instruct and encourage
- Close friendships who know us well, care about us, and share our values
- Community
- A purpose in life - to know God and help others
- A hope for our future
Make sure you help your friend find recovery and benefit from the church:
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church...Ephesians 3:20-21
Professional Counseling - In the US we enjoy a plethora of choices in getting professional help. Professional counselors, therapists, school counselors, and social workers are well trained in this area. If money is an issue, there are many community or county based facilities who will work with your friend on a sliding scale.
Hotlines - These are 24/7/365 resources that are not only for a crisis but are also a helpful place to find resources. Here are a few: National Suicide Prevention Hotline; text Home to 741741 or try this app: A Friend Asks for your phone.
